Amino Recognized as a Sustainable Industry for Its Contribution to the Brazilian HCFC Phase-Out Program (PBH)

Amino has been recognized as a Sustainable Industry for its contribution to the Brazilian HCFC Phase-Out Program (PBH), promoted by the Ministry of the Environment (MMA) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

This recognition celebrates the adjustments and actions Amino has implemented in recent years to promote the development of sustainable alternatives to products harmful to the ozone layer and the environment. Companies participating in the PBH replaced HCFC-141b with substances that do not harm the ozone layer and have a low global warming potential.

A Bit of Context

The Montreal Protocol, established in 1987, regulates substances that deplete the ozone layer. These substances are listed in the following annexes of the Protocol:

  • A: Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and Halons
  • B: Other CFCs, Carbon Tetrachloride, and Methyl Chloroform
  • C: Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and Bromochloromethane
  • E: Methyl Bromide

According to Decision XIX/6 (Annex II), adopted at the 19th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol in September 2007, all countries committed to a new HCFC phase-out schedule. For countries under Article 5(2) of the Montreal Protocol, including Brazil, the phase-out deadlines for HCFCs are as follows:

What is the Brazilian HCFC Phase-Out Program (PBH)?

The Brazilian HCFC Phase-Out Program (PBH) aims to implement actions to eliminate the consumption of HCFCs (Group I substances, Annex C, of the Montreal Protocol) in accordance with the guidelines of Decision XIX/6.

This decision calls for an accelerated phase-out of HCFC production and consumption, starting with a freeze in 2013 at the average consumption levels of 2009-2010, a 10% reduction by 2015, and further reductions until total elimination by 2040.

So far, with UNDP support, the Federal Government has facilitated the industrial conversion of 353 companies in the sector. Together, these companies have eliminated the consumption of 2,160 tons of HCFC-141b, helping Brazil meet the targets set by the Montreal Protocol.
