What are PIGs and their Technical Applications
PIGs (Pipeline Inspection Gauges) are devices used primarily for pipeline cleaning and integrity inspection. Although initially designed for preventive cleaning, their most common use is for corrective cleaning of pipelines with accumulated residue.
PIGs are classified into two main types, depending on their application and manufacturing material:
- Mandrel PIGs (rigid PU): These PIGs are produced with highly chemically resistant PU, and are recommended for pipelines that transport more aggressive chemical fluids. They are robust and ideal for applications where flexibility is not a priority requirement.
- Foam PIGs (flexible PU): Foam PIGs, on the other hand, offer greater flexibility, allowing them to pass through bends in pipelines, such as 45° or 90° bends. This type is widely used in water systems and other non-aggressive fluids, thanks to its resistance to hydrolysis.
Each type of PIG has its specific application, based on the fluid transported and the characteristics of the pipeline. For example, while the mandrel PIG is ideal for industrial pipelines transporting chemicals, the foam PIG is better suited for sanitation and water cleaning.
4Pipe and Amino: a project for the outside world
The most challenging project resulting from the partnership between Amino Química and 4Pipe was the development of a giant 98-inch PIG for a client in Africa. This PIG was commissioned to clean large industrial pipelines and is one of the largest ever produced by the companies. The production of this PIG involved not only issues related to dimensions, but also the formulation of a material capable of withstanding the physical and chemical demands imposed by the process.
This process required a series of tests and adjustments. However, the Amino Química and 4Pipe teams developed a customized solution, adjusting the foam density and using innovative techniques in the PU formulation to achieve the necessary durability.
Importance of PIG Density
A crucial technical aspect in the development of PIGs is the choice of the density of the foam used. Density directly affects the hardness of the material and therefore its ability to clean pipelines with different levels of deposit build-up. Lower density PIGs, such as D60, are generally used for initial cleaning and to inspect the condition of the pipeline. If necessary, higher densities, such as D120 or D160, are used later to remove more stubborn deposits.
The higher the density, the greater the resistance of the PIG, which makes it more suitable for handling pipelines with severe deposit build-up.
